Apple Watch Series 9. Cupertino-based Apple Inc has been working on a blood pressure monitor as well as a skin sensor that could help monitor blood glucose. The Apple Watch Series 10 is expected to launch in September 2024.
It didn’t take long for the Apple Watch to pivot towards wellness after its initial positioning that tilted more towards being a fashion accessory. In 2022, Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman had reported that we could see blood pressure monitoring debut on the Apple Watch by 2024. Gurman has recently shared an update that he anticipates this feature to make it to the upcoming Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Series 10 is likely to launch in September 2024 along with the iPhone 16 series.
Apple has already been showcasing how its ECG feature has been impacting quite a few Apple Watch users. Hypertension and diabetes are health concerns for many smartwatch users and have become a focus for wearable manufacturers like Apple. The Cupertino-based company has been working on a blood pressure monitor as well as a skin sensor that could help monitor blood glucose.
In January this year Samsung began rolling out blood pressure and ECG monitoring features via its Samsung Health monitor app for its Galaxy Watch 6 Series and also mentioned that it would soon be available for Galaxy Watch 5 and 4. Samsung has secured the approval from India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation. The instructions on the Samsung website require users to ‘calibrate’ their Galaxy Watch to monitor blood pressure.
Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch have been in neck-and-neck competition in terms oflaunch datesand features from the time they first came to market roughly 10 years ago.
Gurman reports that the blood pressure checker on the Apple Watch 10 might offers insights into blood pressure trends throughout the day instead of on-demand, real-time readings. Gurman also believes that the feature could be limited due to the initial challenges of scaling down this technology on a wearable. This might impact the Watch’s ability to offer precise readings. We’ve already heard rumours that the upcoming Apple Watch 10 Series could be thinner than its predecessors, come with a microLED display and also feature a new watch band mechanism. It will be interesting to see if the blood pressure tracking feature could also be part of the update.
