It's a delicious Italian coffee with layers of espresso, frothy milk, and a touch of chocolate sweetness in every sip!

Marocchino Coffee (Authentic Italian Recipe) (1)

After drinking many Marocchino's in Italy and seeing it made first hand, it soon became one of my favorite coffees. It has a resemblance to a Mocha coffee but better!

A Marocchino coffee has 3 key flavors that work in harmony together... coffee, frothy milk and chocolate. You don't need to be a barista or coffee connoisseur to make this tasty Italian coffee as its really easy to make at home. I must say, different regions, coffee shops and baristas in Italy make it slightly different but with the same concept.

Other Italian Coffee recipes to try are my tiramisu cups and tiramisu overnight oats.

It's important to serve a Marocchino in a small glass cup so you can see all the delicious layers and creamy consistencies. Starting with a small layer of cocoa powder or hot chocolate at the bottom of the glass, followed by an espresso coffee shot which is then topped with frothed milk. It's then finished with a dusting of cocoa powder on top...YUM!

These days however, it's commonly made with chocolate spread such as Nutella, which is spread against the inside of the serving glass to start. It's absolutely delicious this way, and is the method I have shared it within this recipe. Trust me when I say, it's a coffee beverage that get's better with every sip!

Ingredients to make Marocchino Coffee

  • Espresso is the heart of the Marocchino, it provides the robust base that complements the chocolate. A Ristretto is sometimes used which is a strong espresso drink however you can substitute with strong brewed coffee or even instant coffee
  • Chocolate, there are several types of chocolate that can be used. This ranges from hot chocolate to cocoa powder. However typically, Italians use a hazelnut chocolate spread such as Nutella or other brands. Melted chocolate can also be used as a substitute
  • Cocoa powder is dusted on top to finish the coffee to balance out the sweetness of the chocolate spread so each sip has depth. Raw cacao powder can also be used which is more bitter
  • Milk that is frothed adds a creamy delicious layer to the Marocchino. It's traditinally made with whole milk, but you can substitute with almond or oat milk for a dairy-free version like I have done in this recipe

How to make Marocchino Coffee

Making a Marocchino coffee at home is easier than you think. Here are my simple steps to make this delicious cup of coffee.

Marocchino Coffee (Authentic Italian Recipe) (3)
  1. Take a spoonful of chocolate spread and spread it along the inner surface of the glass espresso cup using the back of the spoon
  2. Add a single espresso shot into the glass
  3. Pour the frothed foamy milk over the espresso
  4. Dust cacao powder on top for a final touch

Tips and Tricks

  1. Use a clear small glass or espresso cup. An authentic Marocchino must show its beautiful layers and intense flavors inside
  2. Use a good quality espresso shot for the best and authentic flavor. However strong brewed coffee or even instant coffee can also be used
  3. Froth the milk until it reaches a silky consistency. You want it to be foamy and creamy
  4. No need to add sugar as the sweetness from the chocolate spread will be enough, however you can customize your sweetness and add sugar according to your taste preference
