I bought an iPad a year ago but never used the pencil that came with it, until yesterday, when it didn't pair because (I assume) the battery was flat, now it's not charging, Apple say “buy a new one” is that right? Seems rather short life for a $179 pencil.

A regularly charged and maintained Pencil can be expected to last for many years. By contrast, a rarely used Pencil that is not regularly charged can be expected to suffer terminal failure within a very short timeframe.
The tiny internal Li-ion battery is susceptible to permanent/irreversible damage through being left discharged for long periods. Even some “new” pencils can exhibit signs of failure out-of-the-box if they are “old stock”. It isessentialthat if you have an Apple Pencil that you charge it regularly - whether used or not - so as to protect the battery from deep-discharge. Do not allow a pencil to remain in low-charge state for any period of time - as the internal battery will fail, rendering the Pencil useless. Setting aside an unused Pencil, for extended periods, is a recipe for premature death of the Pencil battery. In common with all Li-ion batteries, they must always have some level of charge.
Gentle warming of the Pencil (such as placing on a hot water radiator), prior to attempting charging of the Pencil, can sometimes resurrect a dead Pencil battery.
If the Pencil Battery has failed, the only remedy is to replace the Pencil. If the battery has failed and your pencil is within its one-year warranty, you should look to having it replaced by your retailer or at an Apple Store.

- Apple Pencil 1st Generation charges and then randomly loses charge progressHello,I don't have any issues with pairing or working my device luckily but I just wanted to inquire about something that concerned me. While I was using my device, I received a notification that the Pencil was on 3% battery life so I of course plugged it in. I waited a while and it had not changed very much at all but eventually started to show that it was almost done charging. However, when I looked at its charging status again a few minutes later to see if it was done, it had gone back down to 6% out of nowhere. Currently, I just restarted my iPad and now the pencil seems to be charging pretty quickly, however it almost seemed "stuck" on 78% for several minutes. It was going up in charge pretty quickly until a moment ago. I unplugged it, plugged it back in and now says its at 81%. For clarification, since I've purchased the pencil about a month ago, I have not gone more than a few days without using it. So my question is, to avoid having future charging troubles, does the pencil need to be charged whenever it is not being used? Now that I've researched it I'm seeing that if the pencil sits for a while without actively being charged then the battery will simply just dies because it is too small. Also, I purchased this product from Target and wasn't sure what that means in terms of the warranty if I ever needed to fix it. Any answers are appreciated thank you! 3001

If you leave a lithium-ion battery in an uncharged condition for long enough, it will not be able to take a charge. This is just a fact of the way the electro-chemistry works. The problem is more likely to happen in something like a pencil because the battery is so small. It will drain more quickly than an iPad.
If you had been using and regularly charging the Pencil, the battery would also eventually wear out. I'd guess two-three years.

Try warming the Pencil prior to charging (while warm) as suggested. If you're very lucky, Lazarus may return...
