Fellas,

Most of the dials available from Rolex are black for the professional models.

Which one would you choose if all of them would be available with both black and white dials?

I prefer white dials. My dream watch, which is not currently available, is a 36mm DJ, white stick dial, fluted bezel with Jubilee.

Black for sure

Definitely black. You can NEVER go wrong with a black dial in any situation.

small dial like 36mm I go with silver or white, make it looks bigger.
big dial like 40mm I go with darker color, like black or blue, make it looks smaller.

The colour dial I wanted to own and wear and the so called professional models are made in other colours than black or white.

That would be an instant buy for me. Well, as instant a buy as one can make with Rolex.

In general though, I guess I prefer black since I have multiple black dials and currently zero white dials.

Black. Almost all my watches have black dials (with a couple of exceptions). Boring? Maybe. But black is how I like 'em!

Since a meteorite GMT is out of my reach, I went with an Opaline Tudor GMT.

My other watch is a basic Air King - black dial obviously.

My next watch…. Azzuro blue DJ41 ha

I really want to like the white dials, but I can not. The watch seems washed out with no contrast to the SS case. The only exception for me is the white face Daytona in SS. The black sub dials and the black ceramic bezel looks balanced with the white face.

Intriguing. What colors?

For me, I absolutely love blue dialed watches. I like white dials somewhat better than black dials. Green dials on some watches are nice too.

Dark dial for me so black for this thread. This is because it is much easier to read the time with my 65yo eyes.

Between white & black, I'd lean towards black, as it is more legible & versatile. I do love the 5-digit polar Explorer II (casually looking for one with the 3186 movement), though. The only white-dialed watch I own is a SARB035 on a leather strap. It's a "dressier" watch, but I wear it maybe 4x/year.

for me it depends mostly on the watch. I prefer the white dial on the daytona (both my 116520 and 116523 have white). Wife's DJ looks better in white (again, for both of us - her preference). I had a "whitish" (ok light silver) dial YM that I sold - for the 116622 blue dial. But other sports watches are better in black (sub, GMT, explorer). again, personal preferences.

I have both black and white dials, but find black dials are easier to read for me. The contrast between white indices and hands, and black dials makes seeing the time at a glance easier than the poor contrast between lighter colored hands and white dials.

Same model Accutrons, one with a black dial and the other with a white dial.

Which is easier for you to read?

Gotta be able to afford both so choosing isn't necessary! (Granted we're talking silver and not white but whatever)

I like the idea of white, but most modern Rolex white dials are more porcelain than I’d like. Aged or textured white is what I like. But black looks good no matter the dial type.

I prefer black dials.

It’s worth noting that there are a wide variety of black dials, from gloss (piano) to matte and in between.

I particularly like this speedmaster dial, as it can look matte or gloss depending on the light.

For instant legibility there is nothing better than a black dial (perhaps maybe a dark blue) because of contrast with the hands.

That said, white is gorgeous, timeless, and classic. I love my white dial DJ.

It always depends on the watch.

Some of my watches are black and some are white and a few are other colors.

I will say that I think black or white/silver are better choices than some of the other colors available if you only have one watch. If you have a bunch of watches then variety of color is a nice change.

FAQs

Is white dial Rolex popular? ›

Introduced in the model's second iteration, the transitional ref. 16550 from 1985, the white (or Polar) dial has remained an immensely popular choice to this day. It produces such a radically contrasting effect from the black-dial variant that it is almost like looking at two different watch models.

Should a dress watch have a white or black dial? ›

Regarding the dial color, a plain white or black dial can be combined with anything. Coloured dials can also add some flavour to your outfit only if you do it right. For example, a blue dial can be paired with a blue suit. The dial size should, additionally, fit your wrist size.

Why are black watches so popular? ›

There are several reasons for this. First of all, black breaks with the watchmaking codes of hundreds of years ago (white, gold, silver, etc.). Indeed, this trend is above all an aesthetic one. 100% black watches have a striking graphic appearance, they are sleek, sporty and contemporary.

Is 36mm the perfect watch size? ›

If you have a larger wrist, a 36mm case is likely to appear quite discreet and might be preferred by individuals seeking a watch that's low-profile or for those who appreciate the elegance of smaller watches despite having a larger wrist diameter.

Which Rolex dial color is best? ›

Champagne or silver dials will offer a smooth, monotone aesthetic to your Rolex and will never go out of style. These colors go with any outfit and any occasion.

Do white dial watches look bigger? ›

A white dial tends to look larger than a dark one; a bezel can make a watch's dial, and therefore the watch itself, look larger or smaller, depending on its style.

Which dial is better, black or white? ›

Overall, black is the right watch dial colour for practicality — for the simple fact that watches with black dials often come with white or luminous or hands that make it easier to tell the time in conditions of low light and poor visibility.

Which dial color is best? ›

Overall, black is the most practical watch dial colour since watches with black dials frequently come with white or luminous hands that make it simpler to see the time in low light and with poor vision. Some people believe that you should only buy a black-faced watch if the band is also black.

What color watch dial goes with everything? ›

White: Elegance, Purity, and Light

As a neutral color, white makes a versatile watch dial color for almost any outfit – it's hard to go wrong with white. However, as it gives a clean and crisp view, a slight scratch is very noticeable which is disturbing for some people.

Do black dial watches go with everything? ›

We can say that white and black face watches have better readability than others. But to call them "better" in absolute terms is not something that does them justice. So we can say that a watch with a white or black dial is a safe choice for all occasions: they are (more or less) watches that go with everything.

What color watch is classy? ›

It is always best to stick to conservative colors — which is why a blue watch face is your best bet. It's tried and true, like a tuxedo — effortlessly classy. Outside of blue and sticking with the conservative theme, black and light-to-medium grey watch faces also work.

What color watch is most attractive? ›

As a general guideline, people with fair skin tones tend to suit watches with dials in cooler tones such as silver, blue, or white. These colors create a pleasant contrast against fair complexions. For people with darker skin tones, warm dial colors like gold, brown, or even deep blue can be incredibly flattering.

Do men wear a 36mm Rolex? ›

Historically men's watches were around 34mm and women's were 31mm but over time watch sizes have grown and there is now a large overlap with many sizes becoming unisex. A 36mm was always considered a classic men's size but now is a midsize option in the Rolex catalogue and some 36mm are now tailored to women.

Does 36mm Rolex hold value? ›

While Rolex watches are typically an expensive purchase, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36mm tends to hold its value well. This makes it an excellent investment piece. This is especially true for those who are looking to build or add to their collection of watches.

Are 36mm watches making a comeback? ›

Coming in at approximately 33-36mm, these timepieces were celebrated for their modest proportions, with larger designs often regarded as outliers or cumbersome. The pendulum has swung back in favour of the former, as discerning consumers recognise their versatility, comfort and appeal.

What is the most common watch dial color? ›

From all the different colors discussed in the article black is the most common one. Black dials have a market share of ~40% from the mid 1960s onwards.

What is the best color dial for everyday watch? ›
