I purchased an Apple Watch Ultra a few days after the release date in October 2022. I’d had Apple Watches since the Series 1, but when I saw the features of the Apple Watch Ultra, I had to upgrade!
I ordered a Trail Band watch band with my Ultra. It’s nylon and is adjustable with velcro tabs. It’s light, stretchy, and adjusts to whatever tightness I desire. It’s grey with a black edge, with a bright orange tab on the underside.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed the orange tab was dirty. I mentioned it to my wife, and she suggested I clean it when I took a shower.
The Apple support document for the Ultra states it is suitable for scuba diving to 130 feet (ca. 40 meters) “and other activities like swimming, showering, and water-skiing.” A dive computer and depth gauge are highlighted on the Apple website ad.
So, taking a shower with an Ultra is not a concern.
How I Cleaned My Ultra in the Shower
I took an old toothbrush with me into the shower. With body soap already in the shower, I scrubbed the band on both sides, focusing my efforts on the orange tab.
Using the toothbrush, I scrubbed the face, the back, and the sides of the Ultra. I wanted to eliminate any grime and body oils that had built up since last October.
Drying the Ultra After Its Shower
I used a bath towel to partially dry the watch. Next, I took a microfiber cloth I use to clean my glasses and ran it all over the watch, polishing the glass front and metal surfaces.
To ensure all the moisture was removed, I left it out on the covered patio in the breeze for about an hour to dry any moisture on the watch and band.
Showering With the Apple Watch Ultra Keeps It Looking New
After polishing and drying, the Ultra looked brand new. The previously dirty orange tab was once again a bright orange, and the metal surfaces gleamed.
I think in the future, I’ll periodically take my Ultra into the shower for a good cleaning. That should keep it dirt and oil-free and looking great.

Wipe your Apple Watch clean with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. If necessary, lightly dampen the cloth with fresh water. If your Apple Watch has substances or debris visible in places such as the speaker ports, you can hold your Apple Watch under lightly running, warm, fresh water until it's clean.
WARNING: Apple Watch Ultra should only be used by trained divers for recreational dives of 130 feet (40 meters) or less. Always follow diving safety protocols and dive with a buddy. Check functionality regularly during a dive, and ascend safely if there is any apparent malfunction.
With Water Lock turned on, press and hold* the Digital Crown on the side of your Apple Watch until the display says Unlocked. A series of tones plays to clear any water that remains in the speaker, and then you can use your display as usual.
If you mean it got washed as in a washing machine, the soap could have and likely did pit the aluminum finish on the watch and there may be no way to fix that. Apple specifically warns against getting an Apple Watch in soapy water.
When you start a swimming workout, your Apple Watch automatically locks the screen with Water Lock to avoid accidental taps. And if you have Apple Watch Ultra or later, you can have it turn on Water Lock automatically when it's submerged to a depth of 10cm or lower.
How long can you keep Apple Watch under water? Apple Watches (Series 2 and later) can be submerged in water up to 50 meters deep. However, it's not recommended to keep the watch underwater for prolonged periods of over 30 minutes, especially in high-velocity water activities.
The Ultra is rated for survival at depths of up to 328 feet (100 meters) under the water. In fact, Apple was so certain of their new watch's aquatic capabilities that they paired with one of the biggest names in underwater tech—Oceanic—to transform the $799 wearable into a full-blown dive computer.
When an Apple Watch has suffered water damage, it may behave unpredictably. Certain features or sensors, such as GPS and heart rate monitoring, may not work properly or stop working altogether. Water seriously affects touch-sensitive components, which may cause freezing and other glitches on your screen.
When you select Exercise > Swimming menu, the Water Lock mode will be activated automatically. To turn off Water lock mode and eject water press and hold the Home. Eject water: Remove water from inside the speaker with a loud sound if your Galaxy Watch does not emit sound well after being used under water.
Open the Workout app on your Apple Watch Ultra. Turn the Digital Crown to Open Water Swim or Pool Swim. For Pool Swim workouts, set the pool length, then tap Start. When you're finished, press and hold the Digital Crown to unlock your Apple Watch Ultra, tap End, then tap End Workout.
Designed for every kind of outdoor adventure in and out of the water, Apple Watch is perfect for hiking, biking, running, swimming, surfing, and those occasional water balloon fights.
