When you read text on Apple Watch, does it send a read receipt? ›

When you read a message on your Apple Watch, it does not automatically show as "read" on the sender's iPhone. The read status of a message is determined by the Read Receipts setting on the iPhone [1].

In the Messages app, you can use read receipts to automatically let someone know when you've seen their messages. When read receipts are turned on and you open a conversation, the sender sees the word “Read” on their device (below their messages to you).

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Messages. Select Custom. Enable Show Alerts, Sound and Haptic as desired. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and turn off Send Read Receipts.

If the message arrived a while ago, touch and hold the top of the screen, swipe down on the display to see the message notification, then tap it. To mark the message as read, scroll down, then tap Dismiss.

iPhone: The recipient must go to Settings > Messages and turn on Send Read Receipts. Android: The recipient must turn on Send read receipts here: menu > Messages settings > RCS chats. WhatsApp: Go to Settings > Privacy and toggle Read receipts on. Group chats use read receipts by default.

The recipient returns a read receipt on an email client using Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and read receipts aren't sent automatically.

To enable read receipts for everyone who texts you, go to Settings > Messages on your iPhone or iPad and turn on the switch for Send Read Receipts. Now when you view a text sent by someone, a small Read note will appear in the other person's text indicating the time you read the message.
